Lichess Arena Tournament Rules

1. General Tournament Information

  • Format: The Arena tournament has a set duration instead of a set number of rounds. Players are paired continuously, allowing them to play as many games as possible within the tournament timeframe. The goal is to accumulate the most points before the tournament ends.

  • Timing: Each tournament has a countdown clock. When the clock reaches zero, the rankings are finalized, and the leaderboard is announced. Ongoing games at the end of the countdown are completed but do not affect the final standings.

2. Scoring System

  • Points Allocation:

    • Win: 2 points
    • Draw: 1 point
    • Loss: 0 points
    • Winning Streaks: After two consecutive wins, a player enters a streak where each win is worth double points (4 points), and each draw is worth 2 points. The streak continues until the player does not win a game.
  • Draws: Drawing within the first 10 moves of a game results in no points for either player. Additionally, consecutive draws only award points for the first draw in a series unless the draw lasts more than 30 moves in standard games. Different game variants may have different minimum move requirements for drawn games to award points.

3. Pairing and Match Procedures

  • Initial Pairing: At the start of the tournament, players are paired based on their ratings.
  • Subsequent Pairing: After completing a game, players return to the tournament lobby and are paired with another player close to their ranking who is also ready to play. This minimizes waiting time between games.

4. Special Features

  • Berserk Mode: Players can choose to "berserk" at the start of a game, which halves their clock time but awards an extra point for a win. This feature is not available for games with zero initial time (e.g., 0+1, 0+2). To gain the extra point, players must make at least 7 moves in the game.

5. Winning the Tournament

  • Determining the Winner: The player with the most points at the end of the tournament is declared the winner. If players have the same number of points, the tie-break is based on tournament performance metrics.

6. Conduct and Fair Play

  • Fair Play: All players must adhere to Lichess's fair play rules, which include prohibitions against cheating and use of external assistance. Lichess's fair play analysis tools are used to monitor and ensure the integrity of the tournament.

  • Disqualification: Players found cheating or violating fair play rules will be disqualified and banned from future tournaments. The tournament organizer's decisions are final in disputes.

7. Additional Rules

  • First Move Timer: There is a countdown for making the first move in each game. Failure to move within this time results in a forfeit.
  • In-Game Draws: The conditions for declaring a draw due to insufficient material or threefold repetition follow FIDE rules. Players can claim a draw by repetition through the Lichess interface.

These rules should help ensure a fair, competitive, and enjoyable experience for all participants in your Lichess Arena tournaments. For more detailed information, you can refer to the Lichess Arena FAQ and the Lichess Terms of Service.

Finally, the General Rules of Coliseum are always applicable to all tournaments, please make sure you read them before participating to any tournament.
